Co-CREATE: we are co-creating a framework for discussion around the responsible management of SRM research
About the project
Solar Radiation Modification (Solar Radiation Modification) technologies aim to limit global warming by reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth. Such an effect can be achieved by reflecting sunlight or increasing the amount of heat escaping into space.
Experimental research on these technologies is controversial. Therefore, there is concern that they will divert the attention from efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or lead to the unsafe use of SRMs. While such research has the potential to reduce uncertainty about the use of SRMs and reduce the risk of their unilateral implementation by individual countries, it is currently unclear whether and what conditions regarding the management of such research must be met for this to happen.
In response to these challenges, the Co-CREATE project, aims to support decision-making on future experimental research on SRM technologies. The project is being carried out by a European consortium led by Perspectives Climate Research. It includes 14 research institutions and individual experts from Finland, Germany, the UK, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Poland. The project began in January 2024 and will last until the end of 2026.
Within the framework of the project, Reform Institute is responsible for the analysis of previous experience regarding the management of risky areas analogous to research on solar radiation modification technologies.
The Co-CREATE project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 10113764 and funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the European Union's Horizon funding guarantee (No. 10123643).
