Call for an ambitious National Energy and Climate Plan
Twenty-five social and industry organizations have signed a call for the adoption of an ambitious action plan to support Poland’s energy transition and socio-economic development as part of the update of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).
The open letter (available in Polish) was addressed to Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and other members of the government responsible for climate and energy policy.
The signatories call on the government to unequivocally adopt the active transformation scenario (WAM) as the basis for national climate and energy policy. However, they point out that this scenario still needs to be refined on the basis of comments submitted during the public consultation on the updated Draft NECP, which ended on November 15.
“Attempts to design climate and energy policy based on an undefined compromise between no additional action (WEM scenario) and ambitious changes (WAM scenario) consistent with the European legal framework are doomed to failure. (…) The lack of clear goals not only leads to increased environmental damage, but also reduces the competitiveness of the Polish economy,” emphasize the signatories.
In addition to adopting the WAM scenario as the basis for updating the NECP, the organizations also demand:
- The setting of clear goals and an agenda of actions for entities involved in the energy transition.
- The continuation of public consultations by initiating a multi-level dialogue and broad sectoral discussions to monitor the progress of the commitments made
The signatories include organizations involved in activities promoting sustainable development and climate protection. They declare their readiness to cooperate with the government in developing and implementing a comprehensive and socially acceptable energy and climate policy for Poland for the coming decades.
A full list of signatories can be found in the open letter. The full text of the open letter in Polish is available to download.
