Electricity grids of the future - European plan and national priorities - summary of the Reform Institute Roundtable

About the project

Green electrification, i.e. the increase in the share of electricity in final energy consumption together with rapid development of RES, is the key to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. However, reaching the full potential of RES will not be possible without the dynamic modernization of electricity grids and their effective management.

Nevertheless, there are several dilemmas linked to the modernization of grids, ranging from detailed settlements on the allocation of the costs of their development to more fundamental questions about the vision of the Polish Power System development and its alignment with the future energy mix, or the model of grid operators.

The end of November provided new impulses from Brussels in the field of green electrification: on November 28, the European Commission published the Action Plan for Grids and a week earlier it issued a positive opinion on the updated text of Poland's National Reconstruction Plan, which includes new investments and energy infrastructure reform plan to be implemented in the next two years.

These issues were discussed at the Reform Institute Roundtable, an online meeting held on December 1, 2023.

Izabela Zygmunt from the European Commission Representation in Poland discussed the most important elements of the EU Plan. National challenges and possible directions of development were outlined by Aleksander Sniegocki, CEO of the Reform Institute. The perspective of the Energy Regulatory Office was presented by Monika Gawlik, Director of the Department of Electricity and Heat Markets.

The discussion with all participants of the meeting was preceded by comments from stakeholders and experts:

-Aleksandra Gawlikowska-Fyk, Forum Energii,
-Marta Anczewska, CAN Europe,
-Maciej Mazur, Polish Alternative Fuels Association,
-Michal Sobczyk, Renewable Energy Association.

We would like to thank all the participants of the event and invite you to read a summary covering the most important themes of the discussion and key conclusions. The summary and presentation is available in Polish here.
